Beware Hot Weather? Stay Energized with This Drink!

Some regions in Indonesia are experiencing extreme heat waves, leading to drought conditions. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the dry season in Indonesia will soon come to an end, but moderate El Nino levels are expected to persist.

This situation isn't limited to Indonesia alone, as several European countries recorded their hottest September on record, with temperatures 2.51 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 average. The average sea surface temperature for the month, excluding polar regions, also reached an all-time high in September at 20.92 degrees Celsius.

Extreme heat phenomena don't just cause discomfort but can also have adverse effects on the body. According to Healthline.com, extreme heat can lead to dehydration, potentially causing fatigue and excessive sweating.

Moreover, extreme heat globally has resulted in fatalities. According to provisional data, the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that heat was the underlying or contributing cause of about 1,670 deaths nationwide in 2022, with a rate of about 5 deaths per million residents. This is the highest heat-related death rate in at least two decades.

This potential danger must be anticipated, especially for those who engage in physical activities, considering the post-pandemic increase in people participating in sports and exercise. Total revenue in the sports market is projected to reach US$2.27 billion in 2022, with an expected annual growth rate of 9.19% from 2022 to 2027, resulting in a projected market volume of US$3.71 billion by 2027.

The increasing revenue in the sports industry shows a growing interest in physical activity from year to year. However, the extreme heat has the potential to disrupt this trend. To address this, a solution is needed to maintain interest in sports despite the threat of dehydration due to extreme heat.

One solution is to use isotonic drinks that can boost stamina during physical activities. To avoid excessive sugar content, isotonic drinks with sugar substitutes like isomalt are a good choice. This alternative sweetener is low in calories, with isomalt having around 2 calories per gram, roughly half the calories of regular sugar.

This sugar substitute can be one of the ingredients in a healthy isotonic drink. Here's a formula for creating an isotonic drink that contains isomalt: water, sucrose, isomalt, salt, acidulant, cranberry flavor, ascorbic acid, red beet, raspberry juice, proferrin, and blackcurrant juice.
